French students - Reader comments at The New York Sun

M. Sarkozy´s desire that 5th grade pupils in France study a specific aspect of the Holocaust is being met with anger and rancor in France. Part of the argument is that they are too little to learn about that horror. However, every school child almost throughout the world knows about Anne Frank. The problem there however is that that has been stripped of any Jewish suffering. So nobody really has to take responsibility for what happened to that - shall we say Jewish - child. I suppose the problem in France is really that adults don´t want to be reminded of France´s ugly complicity and glee in rounding up their Jewish children to be put into the hands of the Germans. Hopefully, France´s children will look at that past as they study it and correctly identify guilt and responsibility.
