Courbet's Eye and the Camera

Submitted by Nancy Joyce Jancourtz, Feb 25, 2008 15:13

It is interesting to me that Gustave Courbet inspired the young Mary Cassatt, as she, too, did not falsify beauty...She depicted people as she saw them--with their imperfections. To my eyes that is real beauty, although not necessarily pretty...

Cassatt also focused on the female, although with a maternal eye, I believe; whereas Courbet, as a man, would have focused on the sensuous appeal of the female.

I tend to agree with what I deem to be Ms. Taylor's premise--in that artists borrow from other artists, and other art forms--not necessarily "copying" or "plagiarizing" someone else's work...It is human to learn from one another, and that is how we evolve--indeed--in the arts and sciences, and all paths of life.

Nancy Joyce Jancourtz.
