I purchased a new Louis Vuitton purse on a recent trip to New York City, and unfortunately wasn't able to fit it in my carry-on bag. I decided to put it in my checked suitcase, and I had it wrapped in its dustbag, wrapped in another jacket, and buried between layers of clothing. When I got home and started unpacking, I found the dustbag, but the purse was gone. Some low-life thief who works at JFK in either TSA or JetBlue baggage handling apparently believes they are entitled to steal from passengers who entrust their bags to the airline. When I called the JFK airport police department, the detective didn't seem the least bit concerned and said they get reports of items stolen out of checked baggage every day. What is wrong with this system? If they are aware of a serious problem, why on earth don't they have security cameras to monitor their employees, and security checkpoints to make certain they don't take anything out of the area that they didn't arrive with? Why don't they hold managers and supervisors personally responsible for any theft committed by their employees? JetBlue has made minimal effort to resolve this problem so far. The police have yet to respond to my faxed report. TSA has never responded to my e-mail. I have lost all confidence in the airlines, and if we can't trust our possessions to them, how on earth can we entrust them with our lives? This system is critically broken, and needs to be fixed immediately.
