"But conservative critics have questioned why taxpayers should pay to train physicians, many of whom go on to lucrative private practices. No such federal subsidy of such size exists to fund graduate training for high-earning professionals in other fields, like lawyers or accountants."

For the amount of investment in education in terms of $$$ and years (and opportunity cost to obtain this education), physicians make much less than most lawyers and other professionals.
