For Every Private School, a Superlative

Submitted by RJL, Jan 31, 2008 11:10

Elizabeth Green's superlative for the Rudolph Steiner School, "Best Fit for Misfits" seems like a misrepresentation. Nothing she writes underneath the superlative justifies Steiner as a school for misfits. It seems the school wants to keep young children media free, perhaps that is a goal we should all strive for if we want to develop original thought. Ms. Green states that Steiner has the strongest community in the city. How could a school for misfits lead in that way? Perhaps because the school refuses to rush headlong into wiring every room with the internet (Al Gore are you listening?) and digitizing the students at an early age it may seem out of the mainstream. But maybe they have a better understanding of how children learn and what will give them a love for life and learning. Steiner people tell me that they are not about creating successful 18 year olds but successful 40 year olds. Perhaps before applying a destructive superlative to a school a writer should visit the school, attend one of its events and observe the students, parents and faculty.
