For State Agency, One-Size-Fits-All Condolences

Regarding the article about the condolence letter from the Labor Department. That letter dates back to the 1970's when I worked in the Labor Department HR Office, an agency with thousands of employees. Labor was then and still is one of the few agencies in which the commissioner reaches out to the family of deceased employees even those the commissioner does not know.

When the deceased employee was not known directly by the commissioner, the supervisors of the deceased employee were asked to comment about the employee so that the letter could be personalized as much as possible.

I suppose the commissioner could have signed a "standardized" sympathy card instead of sending a personal letter.

I know that the letters were very meaningful to the families of the deceased.

I find this article to be a very cheap shot against a very thoughtful and caring attempt to comfort the families of deceased workers and wonder how the Sun could consider this news.
