So far, independent candidates could not be taken seriously: e.g. Perot was without executive experience and could easily be provoked. Bloomberg may have a tin ear, but he has that experience and is willing to take a courageous stand. As president, he would bring a relatively quiet managerial style without histrionics.
Both parties are heavily influenced by ideologues and special interests; when they face real issues, they go for quick fixes.
