Today, according to a variety of snews ources, Mr. Lefkowitz's statements were disavowed not merely by a State Department spokesperson, but sharply criticized by the Secretary of State herself.

My sense is Lefkowitiz is right and telling the truth, while Condi is furious and dissembling.

Here we see, just as we do vis a vis Iran and the Palestinian question, Ms. Rice flailing wildly to..........do what exactly?

Mislead the American people on the true state of a host of critical foreign policy issues to ensure herself and President Bush some sort of legacy?

It is sad, pathetic, and dangerous.

What we have witnessed these past several months is the total collapse of the so-called Bush Doctrine in particular and US foreign policy more generally.

The consequences of President Bush's languid and diffident performance in office, including his selection of the woefully-over-her-head Condolezza Rice as Secretary of State, remain to be seen, but they can't be good for our country.

Having voted for George Bush twice, I find that a painful comment to make.
