Just FYI, the sonata referred to as the "Tempest" is so named because Beethoven is said to have remarked that if you wishe to understand this sonata, you should read Shakespeare's "Tempest." It's not certain that he was serious about the matter.
In any case, the nickname has nothing to do with storms or thunder. I recommend that you read a good Beethoven Bio - the one by Maynard Solomon is excellent. And of course you know about the Thayer.

I enjoy reading your reviews. They have a certain freshness and enthusiasm.
