Bush at Yad Vashem

Some consideration should be devoted to the attitude of Stalin's USSR in this matter. The Vozhd was not a friend of Jews (Lazar Kaganovich may be the proverbial exception), and his cooperation would have been required to maintain the destruction of the railroad tracks leading to Auschwitz. The B-17 and B-24 bombers would need to land in territory controlled by the USSR in order to refuel and rearm for their flight back to England. The bombers would have had to fight their way in both directions. Stalin did not want American bases in the midst of his realm; he feared infection by American attitudes. Allied resourses were, alas, better devoted to the destruction of the Luftwaffe and the mazes of railway switches found in every German municipality.
