Obama Emerges

Thank you for your editorial today (Jan 7) on Obama. As a Reagan Republican, I have marveled at and admired Obama's rise to prominence in the early Democrat primaries. Although his policy views no doubt differ significantly from Reagan's, I could actually see myself voting for the man in November, a thought that would make my skin crawl were Clinton or Edwards the nominee. Other close acquaintances, all conservatives, have suggested the same inclination. How could this be?

No doubt the lackluster candidates across the GOP field are one reason to look elsewhere. Not a Reagan among them. Huckabee is a Bush-type big spender and a little too cozy with the Christian right. Romney is too slick and uninspiring. Guilanni is too liberal in his social policy views. McCain is a war hero, but he is ill-tempered and has been totally misguided on the imigration-border security issue. Thompson is too lackadaisical. Ron Paul is correct on most issues but isolationist and probably unelectable. Not one of them has painted a promising picture of America's future. They project no Reaganesque view of a shining city on a hill.

In contrast, Obama does project an upbeat, less devisive and more inclusive view, as you note. He stands above the petty race baiting that has marred other elections. He could also mark the end of the Clinton "dirty politics" approach to elections. At this moment, Obama offers real hope, even to some of us who don't necessarily agree with his political agenda. And that is the true signal of a uniter.
