Mayor Makes Case for Higher Cigarette Taxes

Submitted by Don Windslow, Jan 3, 2008 10:52

Once again, the mayor has decided to punish people for engaging in a "legal" activity simply because he no longer likes that activity. At the same time, it allows the mayor to do what he loves doing the most, generating revenue! Perhaps the mayor thinks he's still running one of his businesses, where the one driving goal is generating revenue. Someone with his wealth doesn't seem to understand, (or care about?) how difficult it is for "normal" people to get by in NYC, especially paying the endless taxes he has impossed since buying his way into City Hall.

Of course, there is also the issue of the "fear mongering" campaign, via TV commercials, "his" Dept. of Health has been running. Like most NY'ers, i have seen these ads, but what i haven't seen is "one piece of documented, scientific evidence" to prove what they claim! During a 2006 speech, the mayor stated, "400,000 children die in NYC every day from second-hand smoke". That one "obviously insane" statement should show how the mayor and his leftist ilk have a total disregard for fact!

This has nothing to do with whether you smoke or not. It has all to do with an elected official using the power of his office, (and "our" city agencies) to single-out a group of people and penalize them (via taxes) for doing something "he" doesn't like. It's also about your "right" to make your own choices. If you surrender that right to zealots, what will they ban next?
