Mexicans Get Catch-22 for Christmas

Submitted by William Paine, Dec 21, 2007 10:42

Ms. Ana Maria Archila, of the Latin American Integration Center complains about the requirement that people traveling to Mexico from the US prove that they are in the US legally in the first place by saying, "Obviously we have a whole big segment of the population that doesn't have any kind of documentation, and it feeds into the anxiety of being trapped — literally trapped... To the extent that the country continues not to deal with the issue, innocent people who can't travel home are going to be victims." [Emphasis added].

Excuse me? I fail to see how people who are in the United States illegally are in any way "innocent." With the exception of a handful of true victims of human trafficking, illegal aliens made a conscious decision to break the law. They must be held responsible for the consequences of their own decisions. Yes, our immigration policies are arcane and unfair; so are many other laws but that is still no excuse.

Perhaps the knowledge that coming to the United States illegally means never going home again will give some second thoughts about making that choice.
