Man Without a Party
in response to reader comment: Also look out for newly-registered Republicans...

Submitted by Larry Ward, Dec 20, 2007 18:16

Republicans have produced some pretty remarkable candidates for President: Nixon and Regan won landslide elections for their party- though they were subsequently undone by electronic lynch mobs. (Clarence Thomas's words- not mine) Republican President Lincoln was a minority president but has dominated the political thought of all literate men and women ever since. I think the problem is not that Ron Paul is a man with no party but that the Republican party, if it rejects Paul, is a party with no man. It is not a mystery but the proper function of political and party leaders to move the party and the electorate to unite behind moral and sane principles and policy. The current Republican incumbent assures the we stand united but it is not clear what we are united behind. If we vote for Ron Paul it is very clear that we stand behind the traditional Republican principles of small government and Constitutional law. If the mountain does not come to Mohamed there will be no mountain left. For literalists, I mean that if Republicans do not embrace Ron Paul as their candidate, there will be no more Republican Party except as a nostalgia or a joke.
