Oprah's Rally

For Mr. Wapshott to characterize Ms. Winfrey's efforts on behalf of Barak Obama as "shilling" is unpardonably offensive. In addition, it is untrue that to be politically active on behalf of political candidates is dangerous to people in the entertainment business--on the left particularly such support is common, laudable, and, as far as I know, has hurt none who have made the effort. Ms. Winfrey, like all Americans, should be free to use her influence, money, and fame to advance her political leanings--without being demeaned by Mr. Wapshott or any other pundit. Even more reprehensible is Mr. Wapshott's not entirely candid suggestion that the lady's support of her candidate will make him seem more black and, so, less electable. If this is true, it is a shame on us rather than poor judgement on her part.
