"Tolstoy was a hedgehog," opens your closing paragraph, in which you appeal to the authority of Berlin's essay. But Berlin's contention is rather different. He writes that Tolstoy thought himself a hedgehog, and even was one in temperament and outlook; however, in his great fiction such as War and Peace Tolstoy wrote like a fox, according to Berlin. To claim so unequivocally that Berlin dubbed Tolstoy a hedgehog is to misread a great essay by a great man about a great writer.
