Varejao Offer Scores One For Cavs and the Owners
in response to reader comment: Is that Ric Bucher?

It's a great move for Varejao, a terrible turn for the Cavs. The Cavs can't use Varejao as a trading asset anymore.

And you're actually talking about NEXT YEAR? NEXT YEAR????!!!!! Right now all that's coming off the books is Ira Newble and Devin Brown. The following season, some other contracts will be coming off. Pal, there's very likely 2 1/2 seasons left with James in Cleveland. That's it. The window is closing and fast fast. And you're talking about 2009????? They have one of the greatest athletes on the planet, and you're talking about 2009?????? Who are they going to sign in 2009, Scott Wedman? James Edwards? Donyell Marshall? Just refreshing your Cavs free agency history regarding the superstars the City of Cleveland has the ability to attract.

This wasn't about retaining Varejao as a player, it was about retaining him as an asset. Now they have nothing, because he's gone in 18 months. It's like Ferry's Flip Murray rental, only it's going to cost $22 million for 18 months, including the luxury tax. Wow, Ferry really won this one.

And Bird rights??? Are you kidding me? If by "Bird" and "rights" you mean the ability to fly away from Cleveland in 18 months and then turn right at the Mississippi River, then right on, there's Bird rights. In October 2009, there's a greater chance that you're going to be on Cleveland's active roster than Varejao.
