in response to reader comment: National Motto

Submitted by Rogers Marshall, Dec 5, 2007 11:50

This is a somewhat answere to some of Ben's information. Congress passed the Coinage Act of April22 1864 and "in God We Trust" appeared on then a short lived two-cent coin. Later congress passed the Fourth Congress of Feb. 12 , 1873. The Secretary "may cause the motto"In God We Trust' to be inscribed on such coins as shall admit of such motto.Motto disappeared from the five cent cent in 1883 and did not reappear until the 1938 Jefferson production.Congress added with the May Act of 1908 made it mandatory on all coins. A law was passed by the 84th Congress P.L. 84-140 and approved by President Eisenhower and a joint resolution by congress declaring "In God We Trust" the national motto. There was nothing unconstitutionally about it and Senator McCarthy had nothing to do about passing it , as he was a Senator not a Congressman E. Pluribus unum was a defacto motto. Congress never deemed it necessary to pass a law making if official. I find the meaning 'FROM MANY,ONE interesting but just reverse it with some thought like one .ONE WILL NOW TELL MANY HOW THEY SHOULD THINK.
