Bedouin Darkness Spreads With Oil Money

Submitted by Miriam Mendelson, Dec 4, 2007 07:17

Having spent some time in the region, I can attest that there are many decent people there. The people are as much victims of the Islamists (Wahabis, Muslim Brotherhood, etc.) and the governments (corrupt, coercive) as anything else. We are a part of the problem - the US and the EU are complacent and unwilling to vigorously respond to human rights abuses in the ME, as well as fundamentalist/Wahabi encroachment into the West.

The only hopeful sign that I see is that knowlege is filtering into the Western mainstream, and outrage is the result - a few years ago we (the general public) were much more ignorant, now note the existence of articles like this in the mainstream press.

From this perspective, the unfortunate examples given by the author (Qatif girl, Dubai boy, Teddy teacher) serve a purpose in bringing into the harsh light of day what is really going on.
