Council Member Calls for Limits On Homework

Submitted by NYCSU, Dec 3, 2007 20:55

The New York City Student Union is a student-run organization that adresses issues in public schools. As a group, we believe that a limitation on nightly homework should be set by the DOE and implemented by principals. Principals should limit all individual teachers in their school. Depending on the course, the limitation can vary. Advanced placement courses at the high school level, for example, might give slightly more nightly homework. For required classes, teachers should be limited to 30 minutes per night. Surveys should be filled out by students and parents with regards to the amount of homework they spend per night on each class. These surveys should be reviewed by principals, who will discuss any problematic trends or observations with teachers. Thank you to Mr. Vallone for adressing this serious problem in schools today.
