Fate of Horse-Drawn Carriages in Balance
in response to reader comment: Defender of the Work Horse

Submitted by Judy Mellecker, Dec 2, 2007 17:53

NYC Mounted horses are not seen daily on the streets of the city, but when they do appear they are notably sleek, well-fed and well trained, and under the control of a well-trained mounted policeman. One horse, one rider. These horses are usually present for crowd control, not traffic control. Some of the carriage horses along Central Park South look healthy and robust, but some do not; some are thin, listless, and look worn out. That's one problem. Another problem is the chaotic midtown traffic that all carriage horses, pulling their picturesque but awkward carriages, must contend with. There have been serious accidents involving these horses, and it is safe to say (not extreme) -- there will be more. As an owner of horses, doesn't Ms. McCall worry at least about their working conditions, if nothing else?
