Fate of Horse-Drawn Carriages in Balance
in response to reader comment: Defender of the Work Horse

I am against the cruel and inhumane treatment of carriage horses. I am filled with pity for their plight of having to pull thousands of pounds hour after hour in the hot blazing sun, the rain and the cold winters. They do not get vacations and are not paid and often collapse because of sheer exhaustion and poor health.

Animals cannot tell us that they are tired or thirsty or not feeling well, and we find out too late until we see them fall. Unlike man, they do not have a union and there are no regulations for how long they work each day. It is how long their owner decides they should work.

I would like to see an end to the carriage horse, for they belong in fields with other horses, grazing in the sun. When I see carriage horses, it makes me sad. This will reflect badly on man's history, such as other atrocities of mankind -- drowning and burning "witches", the Holocaust, wars, slavery of children and African Americans. We have risen from these acts of cruelty, let us rise again and free the carriage horse.
