The carriage rates should also stipulate pound ratio: weight of passengers vs. size of horse. Small horses pull lighter loads; chubby passengers require larger horses, Belgian draft horses, for instance. New York has many symbols; an old, cold horse waiting for a fare should not be one of them. Defenders of the carriage horse trade should ride in a carriage in midday Eighth Avenue traffic as it approaches Columbus Circle, and see how they like being surrounded by trucks, cabs, cars, pedestrians, construction noise, confusion, etc. Then, at the end of the horse's working day these same defenders of the trade can accompany him back down Ninth Avenue to accommodations in a second-story stall.
