Willets Point Business Owners Resist Mayor's Plan for Area

Submitted by Karl Starr, Nov 30, 2007 07:15

In 1969 NYC started the process of condemnation of what is now the College Point Industrial Park. Almost 40 years later, there are STILL undeveloped properties there. And what was intended to be an 'office park' has become a series of warehouses, trucking and construction firms For the most part, they took industrial land away from the little guy and virtually GAVE it to the 'bigger little guy'.. Land that was being used by repair shops, tire shops etc. So the mantra was.."Great we removed the eyesore from College Point". What they did, in essence, was move them to Willets Point!. And therein lies the real issue. Those businesses that are unsightly have serviced working class Queens for 60 years. Maybe not pretty but neither are oil depots, garbage haulers, etc. But they ALL are needed services. Where will the working class go to have that headlight put in? Or that hubcap they lost, or the windshield thats cracked?..Oh yes, maybe 20th Ave., or Main St. I am sure you can find a body shop THERE. Ms. Shulman and Mayor Bloomberg drive new vehicles and can call AAA. Most Queens citizens CAN'T!..Again, and as usual, an assault on middle class America to fatten the wallets of big builders and their political friends.
