Mr. Wapshott,
Let's not forget the political operative responsible for the Willie Horton ad
was diagnosed with brain cancer soon after the election, and on his death bed
begged for forgiveness of Governor Dukakis, because he realized how heinous
a tactical ad the Willie Horton ad was.
It was the Governor, himself, who really was responsible
for his defeat when he was asked a question during a TV debate in regards to the death penalty.
He was asked if he would be in favor of it if someone raped his wife ? Do you recall his pause
and answer? He said in essence, "No." That is what turned many people away from voting
for him. They were appalled. Furthermore, there was that ridiculous picture of him in the tank.
That was done at his campaign manager, Donna Brazelle's (I'm not sure of the spelling), suggestion.
The entire analogy is asymmetrical at any rate, and it would be a miscalculation for Giuliani to
pursue it. There is no comparison between a Mayor and a Governor. A Governor cannot micromanage
crime in every city and town in his state, whereas a Mayor of New York City is directly responsible for the way crime is combated within the city, including selecting the Police Commissioner .
