The Perfect Nominee

So, you've summed up the Republican field, eh? I suppose my belief that this field included more than Huckabee, Romney, Paul, McCain, and Giuliani was an illusion. For starters, you left out Fred Thompson — just his name makes me drowsy. But you curiously left out Tom Tancredo, and Fred Thompson he is not. Tancredo encapsulates everything the base of the Republican Party stands for, by both his rhetoric and record.

In the New Hampshire Republican primary of early February 1988 I cast my vote for former Delaware governor Pete DuPont. I watched with dismay as VP George Bush won, DuPont got 12% of the vote and immediately dropped out of the race. The next day I predicted that father Bush would win the 1988 election and that, consequently, a Democrat would be elected to the presidency in 1992. (I had no idea who that Democrat might be.) Republican voters made the mistake of nominating the wrong guy in 1988. They did it again in 1996, yet again in 2000, and are certain to do it again in 2008. DuPont was there, Steve Forbes was there, and Tom Tancredo is there now: The right guys have regularly been there for the picking, but never even come close to being picked. Look at the crappy governance we endlessly end up with as a result.

The Democrat Party cannot nominate the right person, as a right person is never among the contenders for the presidential nomination of this utterly wrong party. It falls, therefore, to Republican voters to put the right person forward so that, in the general election, the nation as a whole can have a worthy choice. Unfortunately, Republican voters seldom seem equal to the task.
