Could Tolstoy read from the grave? - Reader comments at The New York Sun

Regarding Robert Belknap's review of the new Peaver-Volokhonsky translation of "War and Peace": If Louise and Aylmer Maude translated "War and Peace" in the 1920s, how could Tolstoy have read and praised their translation, since he died in 1910?
