Politicians Against Progress

Submitted by CW, Nov 20, 2007 10:28

America must be the land of the "affluent and selfish" as opposed to the "land of the free, home of the brave." Yes, the average stay in NYCHA projects is 20 years, but that is the average stay of anyone who stays anywhere they call home. It cannot be denyed that projects can create a crime problem, but there are other issues at stake here besides the comfort of people who can AFFORD to relocate wherever they choose. Why should people who have been living in neighborhoods be seen as "resisting progress" when they are simply NYers trying to make ends meet.

Politicians would do well to curry favor from someone besides special interests groups or the wealthy - those that already have significant influences on the government process as it is. Before anyone decides to take back the projects - answer the following questions: 1) Where are the residents to go? - to neighborhoods in the outer boroughs that have more of their share of public housing, shelters, etc.? 2) Who is more likely to benefit from this grand scheme? - Real estate developers that are already driving the price of real estate to an all time high? Just look at the the greed created by the mortgage loan industry. The chickens are coming home to roost - and someone somewhere should pay the piper besides the middle class.
