A Breathtaking Vision For the Future of the City

I enjoyed reading your comments, Mr. Glaeser, but I'm curious to know the last time you've actually ridden the subway. Is that the common mode of transit for Harvard economists these days, or are you just sharing your views abstractly?

I'm not in favor of just throwing money at the MTA vortex, but cleaning up the subway system is essential. Currently, it's a drab, disgusting, everyday reminder of what we don't have in this city. Go to D.C., go to Amsterdam (Berlin, even), and you'll see how our world-class subway measure up.

It's unsafe in many places at night, taped-up construction detour flyers are routinely inaccurate, and the heat and stench in August is as foul as it gets. Let's hope Spitzer comes through with some of his subway promises, because I have much more faith in him and the mayor to create a fix than I do the MTA.

Of course spending on schools is vital, but to use the emotional tactic of suggesting that a dollar spent on the subway is akin to stealing from our children is absurd. Does the transit strike seem that far away? How'd that scenario work out for us?

The subways are the lifeblood of this city because they get people to work.
