New Yorkers Gain Amid Obesity Epidemic
in response to reader comment: Parental Responsibility

Though I do agree with you Margaret, that parents are ultimately responsible, you must consider the current "welfare" climate in which we live. If we truly want parents to be responsible we have to stop letting ALL Americans blame their problems on everyone else. I mean really, suing a fast food chain for making you fat??!! I believe this mentality of "nanny" government is the ultimate culprit in much of the health and social problems we have today. The sooner we return to people taking responsibility for their own lives and not depending on a handout from government the better off we ALL will be!

I definitely would be extremely careful about even hinting that this is a form of abuse. Let's not give the federal government any further excuses for sticking their noses into our private lives. Certainly parents who think they need classes on taking care of children should do so, but nothing the government does is ever done under "encouragement," rather it is "force" that is the primary weapon of government intervention.

Frankly, I've seen considerable changes in many of our popular fast food chains. They're picking up on the obesity problem in this country and offering alternative and healthier selections, like all progressive and intelligent entrepreneurs should.
