An Early Hanukkah Gift

That Judge Mukasey proved to be a man and jurist of integrity and bravery is really secondary to the primary problem that we face with the New York Times and its editorial and journalistic proclivities. It is the misplaced esteem that we continually endow the New York Times with based on its glorious past compared to its present day knee jerk editorial reactions to anything offered from what they believe to be the "right" compared to their dogmatic and ideological beliefs supporting the "left". As a lifetime reader of the Times (50+ years) I found that it was not only what they reported but, more importantly, how they presented the news and what they did not report that insulted my intelligence and sense of objectivity.

If I were a Martian contemplating a visit to Earth and relied on the Times coverage of New York to research its culture I would come away thinking that the Orthodox and Chasidic Jews were the oddest and most anamolous inahabitants in the metro area. There is nothing that escapes the microscopic scrutiny of the Times when it comes to the peccadilos of our co-religionists. About 2 weeks ago I conducted a test of how the Times reported on the late Saturday night windshield shootings of Chasidic-owned cars on the streets of Williamsburgh. As it happened late Saturday night it was on the Sunday morning and evening TV news so it did not make the Sunday Times. On Monday I searched the main and Metro sections and guess what? Nothing. I can guarantee that if the Chasidim started to swing chickens in the air it would have made the front page. I won't even attempt to portray its coverage of Israeli life and politics which does not depart from its domestic style.

Letters to the Editor do nothing except reinforce the Subscription Dept's. belief that they still have subscribers. I elected to register my displeasure with their journalism by dropping my subscription 4 years ago and have been living happily ever after.
