Neo-McCarthyism With the Coen Brothers

I took a long road trip with my wife and our 14-year old last July. We listened to "No Country . . ." and found it to be an extraordinary aural experience. We would reach a destination, and then sit in the car for another ten minutes just to get to the end of a chapter. I found Chigurh to be one of the worst, and most memorable villians I have ever encountered in literature. Admittably, I have seldom read any fiction for 25 years. I did read prodigious amounts of fiction in the 25 years before that, but Chigurh certainly stands out. In the pictures in my head as I drove and listened I envisioned Mr. T. L. Jones as the wizened sherif, Bell. Coincidentally, I also read McCarthy's "The Road," on that same vacation. I could not understand why the main character in this novel was pushing a shopping cart instead of pulling a hand truck, but that is beside the point. My family and I plan to spend about $60 to see this movie next week. I saw Chigurh as what's his name? Olmos? Older, and more scarred up than the guy on the trailers, but we shall see. I never worry about who is making money. "No Country . . ." was a rippin' yarn to me, and I didn't even turn a page. I will see you at the movies!
