I was closely involved in the 2006 race to unseat Garrett. I saw what happens when 2 unknowns exhaust their funds in a primary battle. The incumbent, who has name recognition, money, and easy access to more money, walks away with an easy victory. Shulman doesn't really, really, appreciate the enormity of this fact, because he is new to politics (by his own admission).

Shulman's entry means that he and his Democratic opponent, Camille Abate, who announced last June, must fight it out to win the 2008 primary. The winner will come limping and broke into a sprint race to the November election. Yes, it is a sprint. Summer is dead. Then it's Sept, Oct, Election Day.

Just as Bush's entry into Iraq was an unintended gift to terrorist recruitment, Shulman's entry in this race is a gift to Garrett. Rabbi Shulman, are you sure your real objective is Garrett's defeat, not your own victory?
