Editor New York Sun October 21, 2007 Re "Architecture That Cuts No Corners" 10-16-07 To the Editor As far as we, the artists and architects of the Studio Towers in Carnegie Hall are concerned, the issue is not the talent or competence of Natan Bibliowicz. Rather the central issue in this New York story about power and nepotism is the unnecessary destruction of a vibrant community of artists and the historic interior of a beloved building. We, along with Isaac Stern, were instrumental in the preservation of Carnegie Hall in the 1960s. In fact our efforts led to the founding of the Carnegie Hall Corporation which ironically now tries to destroy us. We are fighting the proposed "renovation" because we believe New York needs the diversity represented in these studios. Carnegie Hall does a magnificent job as a performance venue; our role is complementary. We serve as an incubator for the next generation of artists. We are educators, artists, performers, architects and professionals who support the arts. The proposed renovation is an attempt to put Mr. Weill's corporate stamp on Carnegie Hall and does not serve the best interest of the citizens of New York. The studio Tower Artists welcome the support of Mr. Weill at Carnegie Hall, but feel his money needs to be spent preserving the Victorian interior (rather than turning it into office cubicles), and creating an endowment that would enable New Yorkers from all walks of life to partake in a richness of instruction in not only music, but also dance, acting, photography, and other arts. Art, like capitalism requires freedom to innovate. Yours sincerely, The Studio Tower Artists of Carnegie Hall
