bruce, most of the best movies in history have reflected current political realities, in or out of hollywood. the art is where is it's at. ninety-plus per cent of gay-themed movies and tv shows rock people to beddybye. "brokeback mountain" was great because every element of a classic hollywood movie was followed beautifully--character-intensive acting, powerful narrative, mise-en-scene on a scale with action, tearjerking (no puns please), novelistic complementarity of themes and subjects (i.e., a swell script), you name it. in the same sense, i would have liked to have seen you compare this movie with "munich" in various ways. perhaps "o jerusalem" was a failure because the camera didn't love and protect the audience or tell us a story as powerful as the naked female terrorist who pets her cat while she's bleeding to death in full view of her assassins, which include the audience itself. there's nothing wrong with covering current events--in fact, it's artistically necessary---as long as nuance and self-judgement and the focus of cruel beauties must be allowed to intrude...
