You must live in a parallel universe if you think that $5 million (33% more than Lou Piniella, the next highest paid MLB manager earns) is being "asked to crawl to retain his position." The Yankees made Torre an eminently fair offer. He chose to reject it, yet. That's on Torre, not the Yankees.

Torre was given the keys to a team that was ready to win in 1996. Many managers would have been just as successful as Torre was with that talent and payroll advantage, maybe even more successful.

If being made a multi-millionaire and a Hall of Famer is abuse, then as Lincoln said when he was told that Grant was a drunk, get a case of it for everyone.
