Dismissed by Jane Jacobs, Harlem Reinventing Itself as a Mixed-Use Haven

Though Jane Jacobs may not explicitly point to race in "Death and Life" as a critical indicator of diversity, I find that many people would include race (or ethnicity/place of origin) as equal a measure of diversity as small retail and types of buildings, under the litany of Jacobsian urban elements. Racial, ethnic, or geographic origin (i'll say) diversity contributes to the cultural diversity of a neighborhood, often manifest through its commercial offerings.

These should be valued and preserved. I encourage those interest to visit the new website Jane Jacobs and the Future of New York, which encourages visitors to immerse themselves in their own neighborhoods and act intelligently and sensitively on what is important to them there.
