The Paradox of Citgo, an Arm of Venezuela

Submitted by Raimunda, Oct 17, 2007 09:57

This is absurd, the writer has absolutely no idea what he is talking about in terms of what things are like in Venezuela. Venezuelans do not "live in fear." Nor do foreign companies operating in Venezuela: foreign direct investment has actually risen during the Chavez administration. Sure, ConocoPhillips and Exxon decided to sell off their assets (which are being compensated, not expropriated) in Orinoco River region oil projects -- the largest reserves of heavy crude on the planet -- but many other multinationals stayed on. It is not true that American companies in Venezuela operate in circumstances of vulnerability. Our countries have almost a hundred years of cooperation in oil. Venezulean ownership of Citgo is not a threat to national security; it just donated $4 million to community organizations that help low-income children in New York's South Bronx neighborhoods. If anything, Citgo is the last bastion of hope for normal diplomatic relations between the US and Venezuela, when people like this writer seem so determined to destroy them.
