Art Versus Art History

Many thanks, Mr. Esplund, for your trenchant analysis of the stunning showcase, the Muriel Kallis Steinberg Newman Collection, now at the Metropolitan Museum.

Your article highlighted a whole new theme that begs investigation: how does a "forgotten" master's work get noticed above the din of "received" celebrity artists? Who are the "artists' artists"?

I am now on a mission to learn more about those whom you champion: Vicente, Carone and de Niro, Sr. Earl Kerkam plays the very Delphic Oracle from the sweet anecdote you ended with. It all makes me ask for more, and that's a good thing from a long-form art review.

Brilliant work altogether, and just confirms the value added The Sun gives to the local arts world. The New York Times should sit up and take notice. Your art section ranks in the lead in the visual arts, with the likes globally of The Guardian Unlimited/UK.

Congratulations. And thanks again.

Ted Gallagher, New York
