Next, conservatives will be taking credit for the fact that the sun came up so many times during the last 25 years. Much of what has changed about welfare and crime, for instance, has much more to do with population changes: the country's largest generation in history literally aged out of the welfare rolls (primarily single women with young children) and the crime scene (most are committed by the 15 to 25 age group). But there are still 16,000 handgun murders alone per year in the USA, an indictment of failure to get at the true roots of violent crime; and the prison system is overflowing to the breaking point. Conservative changes in tax law have done little or nothing to benefit the vast majority of Americans who could use tax relief to improve their economic lives or get the needed economiuc and social services taxes pay for. Now it sounds like conservatives are positioning themselves to take credit for progress on a whole new set of issues. The primary failure of conservative thought, especially in the Dubya era, (Iraq is an excellent example), is that wishing something was true and then saying it must be true, won't MAKE it true.
