Yankees, and Maybe Torre, Are Out

This is an excellent dissection of the NYY soap opera and the drama surrounding it. I applaud the comments on Phil Hughes and Ron Villone, and think the misuse of both was critical.

In the end, sports teams are all so much alike. You pay someone outlandishly (Clemens), and you want to squeeze everything from him. There is a terrible irony in the fact that Clemens was replaced by Villone on the roster for the ACDS...oh, wait -- NYY won't be there.

I've been an NYY proponent for a mere seven decades, having seen solid teams play and enjoying DiMaggio in person. I learned early that sentimentality wasn't a player when it came to Yankee duration.

I learned to deal with that as a kid. I've seen indignities since (the Berra disposal) and simply looked away. Torre is a knowledgeable, likeable sincere man. He has, in my view, run the team much as his nun sister might run a classroom. A disciplined group can be a good thing, but although too few remember them, there were characters on several NYY teams -- Ford, Martin, Mantle...and yes, David Wells, who displayed passion where there is none to be seen now.

Whatever. Nice job. While Scott Boras runs baseball, we should all just be thankful it still lives.

Basically, we love a game too good to be ruined by those who run it.

This offseason is fraught with possibility.
