Yankees, and Maybe Torre, Are Out

Submitted by Fred Antonetty, Oct 9, 2007 19:17

Hey, I agree with Mr. Goldman on a lot of his points. I love the Pinstripe Bible, and living in Seattle, I look forward to it everyday...(or at least whenever he gets around to posting it.) However, for all of George's faults, I have to stand up a bit for him a bit. I think this man does everything possible to put a winning team on the field (to a fault at times...). I don't see any other owners spending $200+ mil a year on their players. I don't even think the casual fan KNOWS the name of any other team's owner. It's not his fault that Pavano went down the way that he did. It wasn't his fault that Randy couldn't pich in NY. It's not his fault that Moose is a fraction of what he was, on top of, and this is only my opinion, not being able to handle pressure, (I know, I know...A's ALDS, but that was one time! OK...maybe he had a couple of these moments...I"M WRONG.). And it's not his fault that the guys forgot how to hit in the post season. Especially this year. If I remember correctly, he gave full responsibility to Cashman for turning this team around the past couple of of years.

So who's to blame then? I my opinion, all of them had a part in this. Torre for not trusting in the players that got us here. Cashman for not opening his mouth earlier about keeping some of our young players around instead of keeping The Boss happy with bringing in whatever big name he wanted. The Boss for thinking that big names like Giambi, Moose, Randy, Damon etc. were what this team needed instead of letting the people that he hired to do this job actually do the job.

I'm so tired of some of the big name players we've gotten lately. These guys were yesterday's heroes, and while everyone else is working on tomorrow, we were too busy buying has-beens instead of building the next generation of superstars. Even with the current roster I don't see a Jeter or Posada or Bernie. I'm happy with the young pitchers that we have, but with young pitching come growing pains. If we lose A-Rod, Mariano and Posada I have no idea who replaces these guys.

Mr. Goldman, I'm looking forward to a wild offseason, and to reading your blog. I hope Torre sticks around. I don't know who would be able to take his place at this point in time. So far he's been the only manager to come into this crazy house and deal with the scruitiny of fans, media and George and actually provide positive results. I think any other manager would have fallen flat on his face if he had to deal with what Torre had to deal with this year. I hope George realizes this and changes his mind. A 2-yr + optional 1-yr deal for Mariano, Posada and Torre would do two things; 1)give Torre the opportunity to manage this team with a decent pitching staff and a healthy team, and 2)give these guys the much deserved opportunity to close the book on the most storied park in MLB history and break in the new park as the first manager, first catcher and first closer. To get rid of these guys just before opening this new park would be a slap in the face, and would definitely not sit well with me and I'm sure many other Yankees fans.
