New York's Next Frontier

Submitted by J. Reyes-Montblanc, Oct 3, 2007 22:01

My good friend Lee Bollinger, is always gentleman and a scholar.

I sometimes pass for a gentleman but never for a scholar and think of myself as grizzled old Marine. However I have always been fascinated by opening of Frontiers after all my ancestors opened the New World to European Civilization at the time, the Next Frontier.

The results of our incursions into "our" New World Frontier was the utter destruction of indigenous civilizations as advanced as and in some ways even more advanced than our contemporary European civilization.

However, we had the power of Toledo steel and black-powder and the ruthlessness of 800 years of cruzades in the Reconquest of our Iberian Homeland and the repercussion of our taking over that Next Frontier was nefarious for the indigenous population, millions died from European diseases and the effects are still being felt in the continent colonized by Spain, Portugal, England and France.

Hopefuly Columbia's incursion into their Next frontier of Manhattanville will not be as traumatic for the indigenous population of WestSide Harlem.
