City To Battle at High Court Over Special Education

Submitted by Paul, Oct 1, 2007 22:38

We are a working class family on the coast of Maine. Our 6 yr old daughter has severe expressive and receptive language delays which require extensive support. ( She is essentially nonverbal) We used our private insurance and CDS support to maintain intensive Speech Therapy until she reached school age. The public school would have slashed her services to a fraction of the current level and substituted an "Ed Tech" for a certified professional. The public school would not committ to any 1:1 services in spite of a 3 year investment in Developmental Therapy. Obviously we chose to take out a loan and send her to a private school with current services uninterrupted. The ironic part is that while the Special Ed folks demanded we decide if we would enroll her early enough for them to "factor IT into their budget", they scoffed at our request for assistance with any part of private school cost. One would think they would love to dump the financial burden she ( our IT ) represented to them, especially for a small fraction of the real expense.
