A Move in The Wrong Direction

Submitted by John House, Sep 27, 2007 20:42

I had an EKG some years ago. Insurance confusion resulted and I was direct billed $117. I called my insurance. The hospital resubmitted the bill under the HMO schedule. The hospital accepted the insurance company's payment of $18 as payment in full.

In one market Arlene Fauteux was overcharged because she had insurance. In my market, where two powerful insurers control better than 80% of the market, the insured receive a large discount.

Before Mr. Stossel prescribes his solution, we need recognize that there are many problems. For example, a premature baby can become a healthy adult, or a ward of the state, depending on whether incredibly expensive care is afforded. One principal problem is health care affects everyone, not merely those who make the choice or have the ability to pay for it.
