Athens Greece circa 500 BC was the only "true" democracy established on the Earth. And, that only counts if you ignor the fact that Athens only allowed the wealthy to participate. The United States is a deocratric republic. The citizens do not actively participate, or vote on the vast majority of the law making or decision making. The closest the United States gets to true democracy is when a select few laws are placed on the regularly scheduled ballot for a public referendum.
