The Saudi plan sounds great; unfortunately it's a non-starter in part due to the very reason you articulate: The Iranian mullahs are fanatics. They are not crazy, they know precisely what they're doing. (BTW, it's the mullahs that dictate policy not Ahmadinejad; he's just doing their bidding. This is not to say he's not a true believer in the Twelver Shi'as Hujjat al-Mahdi; he is.) The Iranians will not be deterred in the way that, for example, the Soviet Union was. For all their evil even the leaders in the Kremlin understood that a world destroyed by nuclear weapons wasn't much of a world to inherit. Deterrence worked in the Cold War. it won't work with fanatics.

Israel (the other part of the naďve Saudi plan) will likewise never give up whatever nuclear capabilities they posses, nor should they. Not as long as its Arab neighbors and Iran (a non-Arab state) (Jordan and Egypt excepted) openly work towards its destruction. If you were surrounded by enemies in your neighborhood would you relinquish any means to defend yourself and your family? I don't think so. Israel is not threatening any other nation and they have a moral obligation, like all nations do, to protect its people. All they wish is to live in peace.

Iran will never give up its quest for nuclear weapons. They need them to fulfill the prophesy of the late Ayatollah Khomeini, which was among other things, that Israel and the US would be destroyed. (His other predictions, considered sacrosanct by the mullahs, was the fall of the Soviet Union as well as the Shah and Saddam. That is why they are doing everything they can, using every tactical and political maneuver, to run out the clock untilit's too late for the world. You think we have problems now? I think people need to do a little more research and start connecting the dots. And the evidence of their bomb-making plans is substantial. They believe "fanatically" that it is their destiny to fulfil Khomeini's prophecies and pave the way for the return of the 12th Iman. But in order for this to happen there must be an apocolpse, and Iran views itself as that instrument. So don't put too much stock into 'Iraninan claims" to the contrary. I can't say if the Bush "neocons" had Iran in mind when we went into Iraq, but if they did, then they had good reason too. "Rumors, suspicions and manufactuered arguments???" Remember WWll? I do.
