Jane Wyman wasn't afraid to make her career a top priority at a time when such a thing was just not done by a wife and mother. Instead of settling for what life as a sometimes-actress would have presented her, she determined she would not sacrifice her professional fulfillment to satisfy conventional expectations. Her determination paid off for her and for the millions who have enjoyed her acclaimed performances in film and television over her lengthy career.

Consequently, she was rarely cast in any June Cleaver-esque types of roles, and she probably was overlooked by the PTA when it came time to pick the 1953 Mother-of-the-Year. But for the record, her kids didn't turn out half bad...
