OK having just finished the novel in question I could not think of a least apt comparison than Zadie Smith. Sunny? This is one of the darkest novels I've read in years. I think its far superior than Mr. Lytal lets on but that's besides the point. I'm with Kakutani on this one. What intrigues me however and the real point of my missivi is that there seems to be only two kinds of criticisms about this novel: either it is beloved or it is considered sub-par. A very strange range. I wonder which one will win out.
