Who Can Afford a 60-HR Man Next Season?

T Marchman: good article but I am not buying it. Rodriquez is not going anywhere. Cashman said he was not going to enter "into a bidding war" but he does have the savvy to know his competition and somewhere in the process, he will top whatever bid is out there. He does have the fabled Yankee checkbook, and all things being equal, Alex has finally figured out New York, and is thriving. What's a few million dollars either way to him if he enters into the post season and the Yankees advance to the world series. His performance in the playoffs have more effect on his future than money. He can get the money anywhere but to leave the Yankees (and all those hitters around him that allow Alex to get the kind of pitches he wants) would be stupid, and he lives and bleeds baseball. Instead of the fatalism in the article, can't you see that the opting out clause was to take the pressure and attention off Rodriquez, and that it was good business as well to determine his actual worth in the market place? Keep in mind this is his last contract and he will have no trade clauses and the usual contractual language to enable him to control his future until he retires. And last; do you really believe that the New York Yankees would let Alex Rodriquez go for the difference of a few million dollars on an annual salary? He is guaranteed 30 million annually going in, with Clemens gone they could comfortably add ten million to that if necessary. sincerely, Bobby Taylor
